While this website offers examples of products with green attributes that are available locally, it is not a complete inventory of green products. Each retail store has a different catalog, organized in its own way. In order to help you better understand how to find green products, Finger Lakes Buy Green has compiled a list of things to look for while searching through a catalog.
Recycling symbol
- Indicates that a product or its packaging has recycled content, or is recyclable after use
- To determine its meaning, refer to the key at the front of the catalog
- Will be located in the catalog next to each product to which it applies
To find a product with recycled content:
- Consult the index for “Recycled Products”
- Refer to the catalog section for the product, and seek products with the symbol that indicates recycled content
- Read the product description to determine the recycled content for an item
Other attributes to look for:
- Minimal or no packaging
- Recycled packaging
- Reusable/refillable items
- Chlorine free
- AP certified nontoxic
- Low odor/odorless
- Remanufactured
- Recyclable
- Durability and quality
- Produced locally
- Raw materials used for the product (renewable resources versus non-renewable)
From time to time, you may find a product in a catalog that is marked with the chasing arrows symbol but does not include a percentage, or a product that does not include the symbol but includes a percentage of recycled content. If you are concerned about this discrepancy, the best way to ensure that a product has recycled content is to consult the manufacturer or retailer.
